Military Service Procedures

How long can postgraduate students postpone their military service (deferment)?

Answer: The military service of master's, doctoral, and proficiency in art students can be deferred for the maximum durations specified in the relevant laws and regulations. Deferment periods according to the enrolled program are as shown in the table below.

Enrolled Program Type Deferment Period
Non-Thesis Master's 1 year 6 months (3 semesters)
Thesis Master's 3 years 4 months (6 semesters)
Doctorate / Proficiency in Art (Based on Master's) 6 years (12 semesters)
Doctorate / Proficiency in Art (Based on Bachelor's) 7 years (14 semesters)

NOTE: Within the maximum periods specified in the Postgraduate Education and Training Regulation, students' deferments can be made until the end of the age of 32 for master's programs and until the end of the age of 35 for doctoral and proficiency in art programs (see Ministry of National Defense Student Deferment Procedures). For horizontal transfers, the remaining maximum student period of the program is taken as basis.

How can I request deferment?

Answer: The "LEE-AS-01 Military Service Deferment Petition" must be filled out completely on a computer, the "Deferment of My Military Service" option must be checked, and a signed copy must be submitted to the institute along with a military service status document obtained within the last month (from e-Government or the military recruitment office) to request deferment. Newly enrolled students must submit the relevant documents in person to the registry or to the email address lee@eskisehir.edu.tr after final registration, while for deferment extension procedures, the documents must be submitted at least two months before the deferment period ends. The military service deferment request is notified to the relevant Military Recruitment Regional Directorate. Deferment proposals are reviewed by the processing authority and concluded within two months at the latest.

NOTE: If newly enrolled students have an existing deferment from another institution (Ministry of National Education, other ministries, etc.) or another university, it is not possible for the institute to issue a new deferment without canceling the current one.

Does the institute process deferment for newly enrolled students without a request, or is deferment extended without a request?

Answer: Deferment procedures are carried out upon the student's written request. Since deferments or deferment extensions cannot be made for students who do not apply, the information provided here must be read carefully, and the relevant procedures must be carried out within the specified periods.

In which cases is my deferment canceled? If my deferment is canceled due to loss of student status, will it be automatically renewed without a request if I re-enroll in the following semester(s)?

Answer: Deferment is canceled in cases of loss of postgraduate student status, disassociation from the institute, horizontal transfer, and graduation. Deferment is not granted again for a student whose deferment has been canceled unless they submit a written request for deferment again.

Do periods of registered leave (freeze on enrollment) extend the deferment period? How can I request an extension of deferment?

Answer: If the student requests it, the deferment period is extended by the duration of the registered leave. Deferments are not automatically extended for students who do not submit a written request. To request a deferment extension, the "LEE-AS-01 Military Service Deferment Petition" must be filled out completely on a computer, the "Military Service Deferment Extension" option must be checked, and a signed copy must be submitted to the institute along with a military service status document obtained within the last month (from e-Government or the military recruitment office) at least two months before the deferment period ends.

Does the scientific preparation phase extend the deferment period?

Answer: For students who begin their studies with a scientific preparation phase, upon request for deferment, the deferment is processed based on the total of the maximum scientific preparation period (1 year) and the deferment period according to the type of program enrolled in.

I want to cancel my deferment and perform my military service.

Answer: Students can cancel their deferment during their studies. For the deferment cancellation process, the student applies to the Military Recruitment Regional Directorate for the cancellation of the deferment. If the institute is requested to provide information for the cancellation process, the "LEE-AS-01 Military Service Deferment Petition" must be filled out completely on a computer, the "Military Service Deferment Cancellation" option must be checked, and a signed copy must be submitted to the institute.
